Not three weeks ago Chiang Mai’s Deputy Mayor and other officials of the Nakhorn Chiang Mai Municipality attended a one day conference together community members and university and public officials. The conference there was much talk of the need for cooperation from all sectors of Chiang Mai society and the Deputy Mayor announced that the government had approved 300 million baht for renovation and restoration of the waterway.
Included in the afternoon presentations were pictures showing progress on restoring indigenous trees to the banks of the Mae Kha Canal.
On Friday 21st December workers from the municipality, without any prior consultation with the community and volunteers who had planted and maintained trees at Chang Klan, south of Sridonchai Rd, began destroying and mutilating trees and shrubbery as shown in the following photographs.
Destruction is likely to continue on Monday 24th (Christmas Eve), so please assemble there to protect your environment at 7:00 am.
