With the early rains this year May 2011 is a lovely time for tree planting.
This week from 10th May we plan daily tree planting from 1 pm each day
beside the walking path along the Mae Kha Canal south of Sri Donchai Road.
The area was formerly landscaped during the Thaksin era with shelters, seats, historical murals and trees were planted for the 400 metre length of the path. Only one tree remains and local folk report the only maintenance work done by the Nakhorn Chiang Mai municipality has been dredging by a great machine which has destroyed many trees.
Two days of planting have seen over 20 new trees planted and a lot of digging out of weeds. Please join us if you have time on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday and call to let us know on 0849859668 .
Day 4 of planting. Progress is slow and the hot cloudless days have taken their toll, but progress none-the=less as 56 trees have now been planted with perhaps a dozen remaining.
Yesterday had a warm welcome and refreshments from residents at south end of Mae Kha path. Khun Krit from Hi Internet Cafe helped plant trees for the second day running. The afternoon sun got the better of us and we had to take a break until around 4:30.
Day 5 of planting, Friday 13th, Over 60 trees planted and that’s all for now. Two tourists from Australia walked along the path impressed by its beauty, despite the rubbish. Surely that says something about the general ugliness of the Chiang Mai Night Bazzar area.
A pair of old samlor drivers also gave us encouragement.
The next step is to seek cooperation in opening up the public cemetry to the walkway and plant trees to improve the environment there for residents and visitors.
