Khun Sunya, on the right in the picture below,  has now been transferred to work at Lumphun and his job has been in Chiang Mai has been handed over to Khun Payat  (Mobile 081 950 2197) on the left.

This photo was taken during the opening ceremony for Environment activities on 2nd December 2011 during which a deputy of the governor of Chiang Mai delivered an address where he spoke about various problems we face including annual burning.   Present at the ceremony in addition to a lively Symphonic Band from Dara Academy, students from a number of schools, public servants and people manning information booths were some senior army officers.

At the suggestion of Khun Sanya the following photos taken the same morning of deliberate burning of leaves in the army managed recreation area around the dam at Huey Teng Tao were show to the officer commanding Thailand’s northern region.

Fires lit by people at Huey Teng Tao and on other adjacent properties managed by the army is a perennial problem and fires often sweep into the adjacent Doi Suthep-Pui National Park.  While the unusually cool and wet hot season at the beginning of 2011 saw much improved air quality and far less fire than a typical year, circumstances early in 2010 were quite the opposite. The Google Earth image below, taken in March 2010 shows an area at Huey Teng Tao burnt that year.

On the left of the picture is a rectangular stand of teak trees. The area on the right was planted out with over 5000 native trees to mark the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King. After destruction of the area by fire, the land was subjected to an army tank training exercise which knocked down many of the surviving trees.  The tank tracks are clearly visible in the picture.

We wish  Khun Payat  well in his new position and hope that he will be able to persuade the army to cooperate in reducing the problems of fire and smoke and sponsoring lasting revegetation of lands it manages with indigenous trees.

หลักการและเหตุผล

“น้ำแม่ข่า” หรือคลองแม่ข่า เป็นหนึ่งในไชยมงคลเจ็ดประการของการเลือกพื้นที่สร้างเมืองเชียงใหม่โดยพญา มังรายหรือพ่อขุนเม็งรายมหาราช เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 1839 หรือ 715 ปีมาแล้ว ในอดีตน้ำแม่ข่ามีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งและได้เอื้อประโยชน์อย่างใหญ่หลวงใน ด้านต่างๆ เช่น เป็นแหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติ ใช้เพื่อการเกษตร การอุปโภคบริโภค และยังมีความสำคัญในทางยุทธศาสตร์ในฐานะเป็นคูเมืองชั้นนอกของเมือง เชียงใหม่ทางด้านใต้และตะวันออกด้วย เป็นการเพิ่มความมั่นคงคั่นกลางอยู่ระหว่างคูน้ำรอบตัวเวียงกับน้ำแม่ปิงและ เอื้อต่อวิถีวัฒนธรรม ตลอดจนการดำเนินชีวิตของชาวเมืองเชียงใหม่มาช้านาน แต่ในสมัยปัจจุบัน โดยเฉพาะในช่วงระยะเวลา 20-30 ปี ที่ผ่านมา น้ำแม่ข่าได้ประสบสภาวะเสื่อมโทรมอย่างรุนแรง เกิดความเน่าเสีย จนเกิดหมดสภาพความเป็นแหล่งน้ำที่จะใช้ประโยชน์ใดๆได้ เนื่องจากมีการปล่อยน้ำเสีย การทิ้งขยะมูลฝอยลงสู่น้ำแม่ข่า ปริมาณน้ำก็มีน้อยลง โดยเฉพาะในช่วงฤดูแล้ง ซึ่งหลายหน่วยงานได้พยายามฟื้นฟูให้น้ำแม่ข่ามีคุณภาพน้ำที่ดีขึ้น แต่ยังไม่ประสบความสำเร็จเท่าที่ควร

จากการศึกษาข้อมูลและการลงพื้นที่ปฏิบัติงานโดย หน่วยงานองค์กรต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ทั้งภาครัฐและภาคเอกชนนักศึกษา คณาจารย์ ทำให้ทราบปัญหาน้ำแม่ข่าหลายประการ เช่น ปัญหาการปล่อยน้ำทิ้งและสิ่งปฏิกูลลงสู่น้ำแม่ข่า โดยไม่ผ่านการบำบัดอย่างถูกต้อง ปัญหาการทิ้งขยะ ปัญหาเกี่ยวกับสิ่งก่อสร้างที่ไม่เหมาะสม ปัญหาการทำลายภูมิทัศน์และระบบนิเวศธรรมชาติริมน้ำแม่ข่า ปัญหาการรุกล้ำน้ำแม่ข่า ปัญหาวัชพืช ปัญหาการระบายน้ำ ปัญหาการทำลายแหล่งพื้นที่ต้นน้ำและเส้นทางน้ำสาขาที่ไหลลงสู่น้ำแม่ข่า ปัญหาการขาดความร่วมมือและการบริหารจัดการดูแลบำรุงรักษาแหล่งน้ำที่เป็น ระบบอย่างต่อเนื่อง

ดังนั้นชุมชนหลิ่งกอกและชุมชนศรีมงคลจึงได้จัดกิจกรรมสร้างจิตสำนึก ร่วมอนุรักษ์ฟื้นฟูน้ำแม่ข่า   1 ใน 7 ชัยมงคล โดยการนำเอามิติทางประเพณีวัฒนธรรมของล้านนาไทย คือการจัดกิจกรรมประเพณีเดือนยี่เป็ง สองฝั่งน้ำแม่ข่าที่ผ่านพื้นที่ชุมชนหลิ่งกอกและชุมชนศรีมงคล ดังนี้

วัตถุประสงค์ของโครงการ

1. เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมพระเกียรติถวายเป็นพระราชกุศล แด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวในวโรกาส ทรงเจริญพระชนมายุครบ 84 พรรษา
2. เพื่อร่วมรักษาวัฒนธรรมและประเพณีเดือนยี่เป็ง พิธีสู่ข้าวเอาขวัญและพิธีสืบชะตาของล้านนา
3. เพื่อสร้างและปลุกจิตสำนึกให้คนในชุมชนและทุกภาคส่วนได้ร่วมกันอนุรักษ์ ฟื้นฟูพัฒนาน้ำแม่ข่า ให้เป็นพื้นที่นันทนาการในการจัดกิจกรรมพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ เพื่อให้คุณภาพชีวิตของประชาชนในชุมชนดียิ่งขึ้น
4. เพื่อหารายได้นำไปจัดตั้งกองทุนเฝ้าระวังน้ำแม่ข่า เพื่อให้น้ำแม่ข่าที่ผ่านชุมชนหลิ่งกอกพัฒนาเป็นต้นแบบ ด้วยการมีส่วนร่วมแบบบูรณาการ หรือยกเป็น  ”หลิ่งกอกโมเดล”  อย่างยั่งยืน
5. เพื่อความสามัคคีของคนในชุมชน

เป้าหมาย

เชิงปริมาณ    ผู้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมที่มาจากชุมชนและหน่วยงานอื่นๆ จำนวนไม่น้อยกว่า 500 คน
เชิงคุณภาพ    ผู้เข้าร่วมกิจกรรมทุกคนตระหนักและเห็นความสำคัญของน้ำแม่ข่า มีจิตสำนึกในการอนุรักษ์ฟื้นฟูน้ำแม่ข่า และเฝ้าระวังร่วมกัน

2. วันอาทิตย์ที่ 13 พฤศจิกายน 2554 ตรงกับวันแรม 3 ค่ำ เดือนยี่เหนือ เป็นวันจัดงาน
3. สถานที่ จัดกิจกรรมริมน้ำแม่ข่า ด้านหลัง โบสถ์คริสจักรและด้านหลังโรงพยาบาลเซนต์ปีเตอร์

กิจกรรมที่จะดำเนินการ

1. จัดกิจกรรมพิธีสู่ข้าวเอาขวัญให้น้ำแม่ข่า
2. จัดกิจกรรมพิธีสืบชะตาให้น้ำแม่ข่า ซึ่งเป็น 1 ใน 7 ชัยมงคลในการสร้างเมืองเชียงใหม่
3. จัดพิธีไถ่ชีวิตปลา จำนวน 840 ตัว(ซื้อจากแม่ค้าในตลาด) เพื่อปล่อยลงน้ำแม่ข่า
4. จัดพิธีลอยกระทง(ขนมปังเพื่อเป็นอาหารปลา) ที่ไม่ทำลายสิ่งแวดล้อมในน้ำแม่ข่า
5. จัดนิทรรศการเกี่ยวกับน้ำแม่ข่า โดยคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่
6. จัดพิมพ์หนังสือ “น้ำแม่ข่า แม่ของเมืองนพบุรี ศรีนครพิงค์”

ขั้นตอนและวิธีการดำเนินการ

1. ประสานกับเจ้าของที่ดินที่ว่างที่ติดริมน้ำแม่ข่า(หลังโบสถ์คริสจักร) เพื่อใช้เป็นสถานที่จัดงาน
2. ประสานขอความร่วมมือจากเทศบาลนครเชียงใหม่เพื่อให้ปล่อยน้ำเพิ่มมากขึ้น
3. เสนอโครงการไปยังหน่วยงาน องค์กร สถาบันการศึกษา สมาคม ชมรม สโมสร ฯลฯ เพื่อขอสนับสนุนงบประมาณ
4. เรียนเชิญท่านผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัด นายกองค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ นายกเทศมนตรีนครเชียงใหม่ สภาที่ปรึกษาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ และทุกภาคส่วน ตลอดจนคณาจารย์และนักศึกษาคณะวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่, สภาวัฒนธรรม, หอการค้า, สโมสรไลออนส์ ฯลฯ และตัวแทนชุมชนต่างๆ เข้าร่วมกิจกรรม
5. จัดประชาสัมพันธ์แถลงข่าวร่วมกับเทศบาลนครเชียงใหม่ เพื่อให้เป็นกิจกรรมต่อเนื่องจากประเพณีเดือนยี่เป็งของเทศบาลที่จัดขึ้น ประจำปี
6. เชิญสื่อมวลชนทุกแขนงร่วมกิจกรรมทำข่าวเผยแพร่ในวันจัดงาน

งบประมาณที่จะนำมาดำเนินการ

1. เตรียมสถานที่ตั้งเต็นท์โต๊ะเก้าอี้ สถานที่ประกอบพิธีทางศาสนา ปล่อยปลา ลอยกระทง  = 10,000 บาท
2. จัดอุปกรณ์เครื่องพิธีสืบชะตา (ขนาดใหญ่) ขันผูกมือ    = 10,000 บาท
3. เครื่องไทยทานถวายพระสงฆ์ ชุดละ 500 บาท 12 ชุด    =   6,000 บาท
4. ปัจจัยถวายพระพุทธ พระสงฆ์  อาจารย์ประกอบพิธี 12 ซอง ซองละ 1,000 บาท    = 12,000 บาท
5. ซื้อปลาจากตลาด จำนวน 840 ตัว ตัวละ 10 บาท    =   8,400 บาท
6. ซื้อกระทงขนมปัง เพื่อเป็นอาหารปลา 200 ชุด ชุดละ 40 บาท    =   8,000 บาท
7. เช่าเครื่องเสียงใช้ในงาน    =   3,000 บาท
8. เตรียมอาหารถวายเพลพระและแขกรับเชิญ 500 หัว(พร้อมอุปกรณ์) หัวละ 85 บาท    = 42,500 บาท
9. จัดนิทรรศการน้ำแม่ข่า 1 ใน 7 ชัยมงคล    = 10,000 บาท
10. การดำเนินการติดต่อประสานงาน    =   5,500 บาท

Hi Ricky,

I have just been watching a documentary called “Up in Smoke” on the UK Channel 4 network – possibly available on-line. It tells the story of a British scientist, Mike Hands who has been working in Central America, mostly Honduras, for some years trying to reduce the negative effects of “slash & burn” cultivation. Apparently besides destroying the rain forests, slash& burn puts much more carbon into the atmosphere each year than all forms of carbon-emitting transport put together. He found that by planting a tree called Inga  he could hold the nutrients in the soil.

The method of crop planting is called “alley cropping” as the crops (mostly maize & beans) are planted in “alleyways” through the Inga. Unlike traditional slash and burn where you get one good crop after the burn then the soil fertility drops off so you have to cut a new patch, with Inga the fertility remains pretty constant enabling multiple crops and the the subsistence farmers can remain in one place.

For whatever reason he has been unable to convince the world that this system works, though he has had considerable success with farmers in Honduras who once they saw the system in action were quick to adopt it as it provides them with sustainable crops, involves much less work than slash and burn every year and also enables them to stay put on one bit of land rather than moving on every few years. I understand that Inga species are all native to South & Central America and belong to the Mimosa family. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find a native S. E. Asian tree that would do the same thing!

The above is a very short précis of a much more complicated story but with half of Borneo, Indonesia, Thailand & Lao going up in smoke every year this approach must be worth investigating.

ณ   หน้าที่ทำการ  อบต. กึ๊ดช้าง  อำเภอแม่แตง

ภาวะขาดแคลนน้ำโดยเฉพาะในฤดูร้อน และปัญหาน้ำท่วมในฤดูฝน โดยเฉพาะปีที่มีพายุโซนร้อน ไต้ฝุ่น หรือ ดีเปรสชั่นจากทะเลจีนใต้ ได้ส่งผลกระทบต่อพื้นที่หลายแห่งทางภาคเหนือของไทย โดยเฉพาะด้านการเกษตร นำความเสียหายมายังเกษตรกร คิดเป็นมูลค่านับพันล้านบาทต่อปี

การบรรเทาหรืรอการชะลอภาวะดังกล่าวข้างต้นไม่ให้เลวร้ายหรือแย่ไปกว่าเดิม จริงอยู่ทำได้หลายวิธี แต่วิธีที่ดีที่สุด ก็คือ การกระทำที่เกิดจากจิตใต้สำนึกของประชาชนในพื้นที่ ผู้มีส่วนได้เสีย องค์กรปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่นเครือข่ายผู้รักและหวงแหนธรรมชาติ รวมทั้งผู้มีจิตสาธารณะ ทั่วไป ร่วมกันรับผิดชอบ และโดยเฉพาะ ตลอดลำน้ำแม่แตงแห่งนี้ ซึ่งถือได้ว่าเป็นแม่น้ำสายหลักทั้งเพื่อการเกษตรกรรม และการท่องเที่ยว หากกล่าวเฉพาะด้านการท่องเที่ยวนั้น   ต้องถือว่า   น้ำแม่แตงเป็นศูนย์รวมของกิจกรรมหลักด้านการท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เช่น กิจกรรมทัวร์ป่า ชมและ เรียนรู้วัฒนธรรมชาวไทยภูเขา   การขี่ช้าง   ล่องแพ   ทั้งแพไม้ไผ่และแพยาง การสัมผัสวิถีชีวิตชนบทด้วยการนั่งวัวเทียมเกวียน   มีศูนย์การเรียนรู้ทางธรรมชาติและวัฒนธรรมที่หลากหลาย   ซึ่งในแต่ละปีหากคำนวณตัวเลขนักท่องเที่ยวจากสถิติที่ได้มีการบันทึกไว้ ของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่เมื่อปี      พ.ศ. 2552  มีนักท่องเที่ยวทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างชาติมากกว่า 4  ล้านคน ร้อยละ 40 ของนักท่องเที่ยวจำนวนนี้ได้เดินทางเข้ามาใช้บริการด้านการท่องเที่ยวในพื้นที่ อำเภอแม่แตงของเรา และหากคำนวณ รายได้ต่อปีจากภาคท่องเที่ยวของจังหวัดเชียงใหม่อยู่ ที่ประมาณ 38,000 ล้านบาท รายได้ส่วนนี้จะกระจายอยู่ในพื้นที่ อำเภอแม่แตงของเราไม่ต่ำกว่า  10,000 ล้านบาท ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องที่พวกเราน่าดีใจ น่าภูมิใจและควรที่พวกเราทุกคนนอกจากรัก และหวงแหนทรัพยากรธรรมชาติเหล่านี้ไว้แล้ว ยังต้องป้องกัน รักษา และหาวิธีเพิ่มพูนความอุดสมสมบูรณ์ยิ่งๆ ขึ้นไป เพื่อคงไว้ซึ่งการมีส่วนร่วมและการพัฒนาแบบยั่งยืน

การจัดกิจกรรมครั้งนี้ ถือว่าเป็นกิจกรรมพิเศษอย่างยิ่งด้วยวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อถวายแด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ด้วยกิจกรรมสาธารณะประโยชน์ เพื่อเป็นการแบ่งเบา พระราชภาระ สนองพระราชดำริ เรื่อง น้ำ ทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ สิ่งแวดล้อม และแนวทางการพัฒนาตามทฤษฎี เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง เพื่อความอยู่ดีมีสุขของคนไทยทุกคน ตลอดจนเพื่อประโยชน์ทางด้านการเกษตร การท่องเที่ยว และ อื่นๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง

ได้ร่วมกันจัดกิจกรรม บวชป่า ปลูกป่า ปลูกหญ้าแฝก เก็บขยะตามลำน้ำแม่แตงและสองข้างฝั่ง รวมทั้งรับบริจาคเมล็ดพันธุ์ไม้ยืนต้นท้องถิ่น เป็นระยะทางประมาณ 33 กิโลเมตร

We all like Clean & Green these days so after a refreshing Easter Day service at the Chiang Mai Railway Park your reporter took a leisurely ride to view the real Mae Kha, also known as Mae Kha Noi, south of the Kham Tien Market.

The Mae Kha Noi winds along parallel to the straight Mae Kha canal which saw frenzied cleaning activity during 2010, the year of  ”Chiang Mai Yiem”.

Unlike its straight counterpart this is the real Mae Kha and often has old trees to make the point.  Another difference is that while it has assets the canal lacks, something otherwise distinctive along the Mae Kha today was completely  missing from the areas in these photos.

How about assets -

1. a close-knit community which keeps its environment as clean as possible under difficult conditions;

2. a car free residential precinct

3. no unsightly overhead wires ( the wires in the view from above are on the neighboring property of the Central Pattana mega-business. The lack of trees on the Central property made this picture possible.)

4.  convenient low energy (how many air-cons per 7/11 store?) shopping.

About problems – Despite the public cleanliness rubbish still comes down the stream and often lodges under the houses and although the air smelled sweet after a night of rain this is not always the case.

Yet the local and central governments seem happy to leave this community alone, despite the fact that all the structures are either over the stream or on public rights of way. And the big companies which own large tracts of land nearby feel no need to share there land with this community.

Meanwhile the municipality of Nakhorn Chiang Mai which has been talking about cleaning up the Mae Kha for over a year has just announced that a 2 million baht grant from Bangkok is to be spent on replacing a few small trees around the city moat and adding name tags, yet another obstruction to pedestrians, to the trees.

In consideration of the ongoing Nuclear disaster in Japan –  the ongoing multiple Nuclear MELTDOWNS that are now underway (as I write this) — , I noted yesterday that the Japanese government has recently raised the maximum allowable exposure for nuclear workers to 250 millisieverts from 100 millisieverts.

The damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant has already leaked dangerous radiation into the environment.
There are HUGE fears over food contamination in Japan right now and the entire Pacific food chain is likely to be affected**.

This disaster in Japan could even result in the gross radioactive contamination of the large urban populations of Japan.
If the wind blows the wrong way cities like like Tokyo could be the recipient of a massive cloud of deadly radioactive gasses.
It could become a really horrible crisis.  It is actually a wake-up call for nuclear energy.

Incredibly, I also just learned that the World Health Organization actually intends to double the “maximum allowable uranium in drinking water” worldwide and international regulators like the International Commission for Radiological Protection (ICRP) continue to push allowable levels of radiation upwards, forcing the public toward chronic exposures of low levels of radiation. (No level of ionizing radiation is safe.)

Considering that the Japanese are some of the biggest Seafood eaters in the world — and in particular, raw seafood (Sushi and Sashimi) is a staple part of their diet, the fact thatRadioactive water from the Japanese nuclear plant is deliberately being dumped into the sea‎ is already beyond criminal!~

As well, they are already halting the sale of vegetables from several areas of Chiba prefecture, which borders Tokyo because they “have tested above the legal limit for radiation”.

I am a Steering Committee member of the Canadian Biochar Initiative (www.biochar.ca), am President and Co-founder of Biochar-Ontario (a not-for-profit organization) and an Advisory Committee Member of the IBI (International Biochar Initiative - http://www.biochar-international.org/).

We have recently learned that is likely that it may be possible to utilize Biochar — along with specialized natural fungi like the ones that have been growing prolifically around the Chernobyl plant in Russia, to soak up (and hopefully permanently “sequester” ~ if harvested and pyrolyzed), the ionizing radiation from radionuclides that are in the soil.

– In other words, we may be able to remove these contaminants directly out of the soil with the use of specialized inoculated Biochar (blends) that promote the growth of these particular strains of natural soil fungi — which will also (coincidentally) promote the regrowth of the coastal forests … which in turn should be able to help protect the Japanese people against future catastrophic events like the Tsunami.  (In a similar way to the protection that Mangroves provide to coastal cities against Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida.)

I have been attempting to head up an initiative called, “5ivePlanets Canada“, and one of our first tasks has been to assist with a project to bring the Tokyo Sinfonia[www.tokyosinfonia.com], a highly professional ensemble of 19 Japanese string players conducted by Robert Rÿker in Tokyo, into Canada from Sunday April 24 until Thursday April 28 (with scheduled Performances in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto).

This series of Charity Concerts in Canada is intended to be a Musical Fund-Raising Charity Concert Tour to raise money for the 5ivePlanets Japan initiative, whose mission is to leverage both education and technologies that work in balance with the natural cycles of the earth to increase our capacity to provide for our collective children on the one and only planet we actually have.

They will be establishing a 5ivePlanets Interpretive Center in an eco-restored house in Asahi Ward of Yokohama City and will provide education about managing resources wisely and demonstrating technologies to produce nourishing food without wasting water, depleting soil, or using petroleum based fertilizers.  These Biochar concepts can be applied in both urban and rural contexts and are geared toward developing platforms for sustainable communities.

Their Projects will include proof of concept demos of aquaponics systems, biochar humanitarian stoves and urban agricultural techniques, along with explorations of method of utilizing Biochar for the decontamination of radioactive soil using “specialized natural fungi” (with Biochar).

The use of Biochar to prevent radionuclides from entering growing plants and entering the food chain as well as preventing these highly toxic contaminants from entering run-off water from farms and forests and getting into the water supply system will be one of the priority research projects of the emerging Global 5iveplanets Research Network, the founding members of which are Canada and Japan.  (With some assistance from our friends at the University of Massachusetts and the Pioneer Valley Biochar Initiative at UMass.)

I was hoping that you might be able to forward this message, along with the attached documents to your members and contacts in order that we might begin to raise awareness about the ongoing critical situation in Japan and our efforts at informing people about one of the possibly critically important technologies that could be utilized in Japan — and elsewhere around there world wherever soil contamination is affecting food security — to begin the long process of “restoration” of the natural ecosystems that have been affected by these (multiple) natural disasters.

Accept the request made by the Mayor of Koriyama city and decide to decommission the Fukushima nuclear power plants!

Appeal:

Immediately decide to decommission all of the 10 reactors of the first and second Fukushima nuclear power plants.

Background of the appeal:

Masao Hara, the Mayor of Koriyama city, at the press conference in the afternoon on March 19, 2011, said, it was the outrageous mistake that the Japanese government turned down the support offered by the United States which suggested decommissioning the nuclear plants. He announced that he made a request to the Tokyo Electric Power Company and Mr. Kaieda, the Minister of economy, trade and industry to immediately take measures to control the nuclear accidents towards decommissioning the plants.

We urge the State and the Tokyo Electric Power Company to accept the request made by the Mayor of Koriyama city and decide to decommission the Fukushima nuclear power plants.

We are worried about the workers who have been courageously engaging in the operations day and night to suppress the reactors and avert the worst-case scenario at their peril of being exposed to the radiation at the Fukushima nuclear power plants which were affected by the recent and continuing earth quakes.

It has become clear to everyone that as long as the nuclear plants run, people are affected by the radiation. So many nuclear plant workers have been exposed to the radiation and some died from the radiation exposure even when the plants were running “safe”. The people are little known who died after a long suffering, when the causal link between the death and the radiation exposure became difficult to establish.

We must now stop our practice: enjoying the “safe” electricity from the nuclear power plants at the expense of the people exposed to the radiation.

Levels Explained

The above colour zones; Green, Yellow and Red zones have been calculated as follows.

PM10

The World Health Organization (WHO) 2005 air quality guidelines were used. This report sets a recommended limit of 50 µg/m3 in a 24-hour period and this has been presented in green. In order to help countries like Thailand to reduce their PM10 levels, the WHO published interim levels for which they have 3. The yellow area therefore represents interim level 3 which sets a limit of 75 µg/m3 in a 24-hour period. Anything above this is displayed in red which indicates a unhealthy air quality level.

Air Quality Index (AQI)

Each country around the world has it’s own ‘Air Quality Index’ or AQI guidelines and terminology can differ for example some countries call this measurement the ‘Air Pollution Index’ API (see Wikipedia entry). This monitors a number of components including sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), suspended particulates (PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3). Thailand too has it’s own formula for calculating their AQI level (see PCD explanation), which has been used here.

What can we do to help?

Every year there is much talk about this major air quality issue, which usually includes many complaining about those who clear land through burning, the large increase in cars and trucks on the reads and the continuing development of green areas turning into concerete jungles.

In the past, lots of pressure has been put on local government and some positive action has been taken, for example the setup of a helpline to report illegal burning saw residents call in their masses.

Unfortunately the measures are only having a mild effect and as soon as levels return to “normal”, it’s all but forgotten for another year. More needs to be done, but what?

Wednesday 26th January 2011 saw a rainbow forest of “Autumn” leaves (dry Dipterocarp forest especially Shorea siamensis รัง ) and red flowering trees (Butea monosperma  ทองกวาว )ใ

This photo was taken along the road between Chiang Dao and Fang about 80 km from Chiang Mai city but to see it be quick as the leaves and flowers soon will drop and the sky will turn to a pale grey from smoke haze. On the return journey in the early evening three roadside fires, one in a government office compound and one large fire in the forest were seen. The Fire Brigade 199 number did not answer.
