Smoke Haze hits Chiang Mai February 2010
You may have noticed that Doi Suthep seems to be disappearing into the murk of late. This markup of a photo from NASA shows why. Smoke plumes in the lower left corner show the wind heading generally ENE, while those at the top show it heading generally N. Regardless, the prevailing winds right around our house here in Chiang Mai seem generally to be from the NNW, which would bring us the smoke from the Burmese fires to the left of Fang. – Thanks to David Hardcastle & Hak Hakanson

Haze in Northern Thailand and Laos – satellite image
The level of PM10, the fine particles that cause haze, has reached 300
micrograms per cubic meter in some areas of Northern Thailand. I am
not aware of any monitoring stations in Laos, but the Thai data is
updated daily at this website:

The Thai Government has set the ‘safe’ level for PM10 at 120, but this
is much higher than established by other countries. The European
standard is 50.
The health impact of exposure to high levels of PM10 over a number of
days is considerable, and will have long-term effects for children. A
Thai study indicated a 1.9% increased risk of dying from
cardiovascular disease, and 1.0% risk of all disease for every 10
micrograms per cubic meter.
And where is it coming from?
Well, here is a satellite photo taken by NASA last week. It shows
hundreds of fires in Laos and neighbouring countries.
